Your choice of tuition
Automatic vs manual?
Which should you learn in?
It’s one of the first questions many new learners ask. There isn’t a single right answer: the best choice depends on your needs, your budget and what you expect to drive after passing your test.
At Barnes Driving Club, we’ve made a deliberate decision to teach in a manual. For most new drivers, we believe it offers the best balance of flexibility, value and future choice. But that doesn’t mean automatic is the wrong route.
Why automatic can make sense
With no clutch pedal to manage or manual gear changes to make, an automatic gives you fewer controls to coordinate while learning. Some learners find this less stressful and feel more comfortable concentrating on observation, positioning and planning ahead.
If you expect to drive only automatic cars, or find managing a clutch and gears a particular barrier, automatic tuition could be a good fit.
Think about your first car
The decision isn’t just about lessons. It’s also about the car you’ll drive after you pass your test.
Most young drivers have a budget of about £5,000 for their first car. It’s worth comparing the manual and automatic cars available in your price range before choosing how to learn. Pay particular attention to how insurance premiums and other running costs compare.
We favour manual tuition because keeping both options open gives you more freedom to choose a car that suits your budget and circumstances.
Does learning manual make you a better driver?
Not necessarily. Safe driving depends on observation, anticipation, judgement and decision-making. Those skills matter whatever you drive.
Using a clutch and gearbox is an additional practical skill. It gives you more options, but it isn’t what makes you a safe and considerate driver.
What about the future?
If you expect your next car to be automatic or electric, learning in an automatic may suit your plans. It’s worth balancing those plans against what you can afford and expect to drive immediately after passing.
Why we teach manual—and support your choice
Our preference for manual tuition is about giving pupils flexibility for the road ahead. We also recognise that everyone’s circumstances are different.
If you decide automatic tuition is right for you, we’ll happily point you towards a trusted local instructor who specialises in it. We’d rather you learn in the car that suits you than choose Barnes Driving Club simply because we’re nearby.
Whichever route you take, the aim is the same: to become a safe, confident and considerate driver for life.
